How to Handle an Urgent Passport When You Travel Within 14 Days
When international travel is within 14 calendar days, use the official urgent-agency process, prepare proof of travel and the correct form, and separate government requirements from any optional private assistance.

For an urgent passport within 14 days of international travel, first confirm whether you have already applied, then follow the Department of State’s agency-appointment instructions and prepare printed travel proof, the correct form, citizenship and identity evidence, a photo, and all applicable fees.
SameDay Passport & Visas is a private passport and visa assistance service, not the U.S. Department of State. SameDay cannot approve or issue a passport, sell or guarantee a government appointment, change official eligibility rules, or promise a delivery outcome. Professional service fees are separate from government, acceptance, delivery, and shipping charges. You may apply directly through official government channels.

Does travel within 14 days qualify as urgent?
The Department’s urgent travel guidance allows an agency appointment when international travel is within 14 calendar days. If a foreign visa is required, the appointment window may extend to 28 calendar days before travel.
The window establishes possible appointment eligibility; it does not guarantee a slot or passport issuance. The appointment must be official, the travel proof must be real, and the application still undergoes normal identity, citizenship, entitlement, and fraud checks.

Start by asking: have you already applied?
If you have not applied, use the online passport appointment system when you are inside the eligible window. The system checks the travel information before showing available slots.
If you already applied and travel is within 14 days, follow the official contact instructions and call 877-487-2778 with your application locator number. Do not file a duplicate application unless the Department instructs you to do so.
| Status | Official first step | What to have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Not yet applied | Use the official online appointment system | Travel date, applicant details, email, mobile phone |
| Already applied | Call the National Passport Information Center | Locator number, travel date, identity details |
| Life-or-death emergency | Use the separate emergency instructions | Emergency evidence plus travel proof |
When can you book the appointment?
For urgent travel, the appointment itself must fall inside the permitted window. If the trip is farther away, prepare early and use routine or expedited submission rather than trying to hold an urgent slot.
The official system may hold a selected appointment briefly while you confirm it. Use your own email and phone, keep the confirmation, and cancel promptly if plans change so the slot can return to the system.
- Use only passportappointment.travel.state.gov or official phone instructions.
- Do not book duplicate appointments.
- Do not pay for, transfer, or purchase an appointment.
- Do not travel to an agency without unique confirmed appointment details.

Choose the correct form before the urgent visit
Use Form DS-11 for a first passport, a child under 16, or an applicant who cannot meet the renewal requirements. DS-11 applicants must appear in person and should not sign the form until instructed by an authorized acceptance agent or passport employee.
A renewal-eligible adult may use Form DS-82. Lost, stolen, or materially damaged passports generally cannot follow the normal DS-82 renewal path. A name change or limited-validity passport may require a different form based on timing and evidence.
Use the Department’s passport form guide and fee calculator if the correct form is uncertain.
Urgent passport appointment checklist
Prepare the packet before searching for a last-minute slot. A newly available appointment is not useful if required originals, photocopies, a compliant photo, or travel proof are missing.
- Printed appointment confirmation
- Printed proof of international travel
- Correct completed application form
- Original citizenship evidence and photocopy
- Physical photo ID and photocopy
- One compliant passport photo
- Current or previous passport when applicable
- Name-change, parental-consent, loss, or damage documents when applicable
- Government application and expedite fees

What does an urgent passport application cost?
An agency application includes the normal passport application fee and the $60 expedite fee. DS-11 applicants may also owe a $35 acceptance fee depending on where the execution step occurs. Review the current passport fee schedule.
Optional return delivery is currently $23.36 for an issued passport book. Outbound shipping, local travel, parking, and private professional fees are separate. Ask for a written breakdown instead of comparing only one advertised number.
What if your application is already in process?
Do not submit a second application simply because the first is still processing. Locate the nine-digit application number, check status, and contact the Department when travel is within the urgent window.
The Department may notify the agency already handling the application, add faster return delivery, or arrange an appointment if it is not possible to complete the case before travel. The available response depends on where the application is and what information is missing.
- Have the application locator number ready.
- Review every letter or email requesting more information.
- Bring copies of the submitted application if instructed.
- Keep printed travel proof and updated itinerary available.

Los Angeles notes for urgent travelers
The Los Angeles Passport Agency is in the West L.A. Federal Building at 11000 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 1000. It is by appointment only. Verify current hours, security rules, parking, and transit on the official Los Angeles agency page.
Los Angeles travelers who want private document review can compare that option with applying directly and review SameDay’s Los Angeles passport assistance. Private help does not create an appointment or control issuance.
Four urgent-case paths that change the checklist
The same departure date can produce different next steps because application status and form eligibility change the package. A traveler who has not applied follows the appointment instructions for a new urgent application, while a traveler with an application already in process follows the Department’s contact and transfer instructions.
Use the official urgent appointment instructions as the controlling source. The matrix below is a preparation aid: it does not create eligibility, reserve an appointment, or replace the instructions attached to a confirmed appointment.
- Do not submit a duplicate application unless the Department instructs you to do so.
- Do not sign DS-11 before the authorized acceptance or passport employee directs the signature.
- Do not assume an agency can repair missing consent, citizenship, identity, or loss evidence at check-in.
- Keep alternate travel arrangements until the passport is physically available for use.
| Case status | Primary route question | Preparation focus |
|---|---|---|
| Not yet applied; DS-11 case | Does the applicant qualify for an agency appointment? | Unsigned DS-11, citizenship and identity evidence, photocopies, photo, travel proof, and applicable fees |
| Not yet applied; DS-82-eligible renewal | Does the urgent agency route fit better than mailing? | Renewal form, most recent passport, name evidence when applicable, photo, travel proof, and fees |
| Application already in process | Should the applicant contact the National Passport Information Center? | Application locator number, travel date, itinerary, current status, and any Department instructions |
| Child, lost, damaged, or complex case | What additional evidence is required beyond the travel proof? | Consent, loss report, damaged passport statement, name evidence, or other case-specific documents |
